Welcome to Week 6 - Middleton Dual

Hello everyone,

Welcome to week 6! It is our first dual meet week and I am very excited! There's lots to cover today as we review how a dual meet goes. Please read this whole email to make sure you have all the information you need.

Week 5 Recap:

Girls spent last week working on routines with some skill upgrades here and there. We are having some awesome skill upgrades and goal completions at practice, such as:

  • Emma got her Round Off - Back Tuck on the air track!

  • Niylah did a Round Off - Back Tuck on Floor!

  • Kylie got her backward roll on beam!

  • Kate got her two uprises back on bars!

Per usual, these are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head. If I forgot one, tell me so I can include it in the next email!

Our routine work is paying off at competitions as I have received feedback from judges at both the invites that the girls skills and routines look pretty clean, especially for being so early in the season. This is a BIG compliment that everyone should take to heart! :)

At Craig, our competitors did really well and earned us a team score of 126.5 (out of 160 total). That is a significant boost from our Rapids score and part of that comes from increasing confidence in skills and routines. We also had MULTIPLE PRs (personal records) where girls got their highest score from their entire high school gymnastics career!

Some highlights for each of our competitors:

  • Sofia D stuck her beam routine, earning her the FIRST 'No Fall' star of the season and also placed 4th on bars!

  • Tenzin's floor routine had us all in awe and she placed 6th on floor (tied with Sofia G)!

  • Sofia G did her TWO giants AGAIN successfully and also placed 6th on floor (tied with Tenzin).

  • Genevieve got her PR on floor with an 8.3 (previous was a 8.125) and also got two sticky feet for her stuck floor passes - which is HARD to do!

  • Natalie got her PR for bars with a 6.45 (previous PR was a 6.4)!

  • Amelia got her PR for bars with a 6.125 (previous PR was a 5.0)!

  • Sierra got her PR for floor with a 8.15 (previous PR was a 7.85)!

  • Grace got TWO stuck vaults in a row!

  • Claire competed a new series on beam (wolf 3/4 - side split jump) that is incredibly challenging to do but she has been up to the challenge.

  • Finja's twisting on vault is ever increasing in speed and starting to look second nature for her.

A huge thank you to Emma and Timmia for being our alternates and safeties! Even though they didn't compete, they provided us with the much needed confidence that if anything were to occur, they were there to jump in!

In total, our athletes earned 1 No Fall Star on beam and 11 Sticky Feets for stuck landings!

Week 6 Practice Schedule:

Monday: 5:00 - 7:00 PM (Spaghetti Dinner Afterwards)

Tuesday: 6:30 - 8:30 PM

Wednesday: 6:30 - 8:30 PM (Blizzard Treats to celebrate 25 goals completed!)

Thursday:  Middleton Dual Meet (Details below)

Friday:  4:30 - 6:30 PM

We will have a special visitor this week at practice! Sophie Pop-Vicas graduated last year, went to Senior Nationals, and helped coach at Badger in the off season. She is home from college and will be helping coach while she is home! Sophie was a very talented gymnast and is also an excellent coach so we are excited to welcome her home!

A reminder that Wednesday is a required practice for everyone but if you are slated to compete on Thursday, you must be at Wednesday practice and cannot use your time off.

Middleton Dual Meet :

Our first dual meet is at Middleton High School this Thursday. The schedule for the day is below:

3:00 / 3:15 AM: Meet at the gym (girls get early released from class - waiting for confirmation from the school still).

3:45 PM: Leave the school.

4:00 PM: Arrive at the school.

4:30 PM: General Warm Ups and Stretching start.

5:00 PM: Event Warm Ups Start (we warm up for 20 minutes on vault first and then 20 minutes on bars second).

5:50 PM: March In (parents should plan to arrive around 5:30 / 5:45).

6:00 PM: Meet Officially Starts.

8:30 / 9:00: Meet ends and we head back to Memorial.

Dual meets are very different from an invite. The outline below indicates how the meet is laid out:

  • When we warm up bars and vault prior to the meet starting, we will do so all together (every JV and Varsity kiddo together).

  • After march in, we compete bars first.

  • We compete vault second (if a 2 minute touch is needed for higher levels vaults or to warm kiddos back up, we can do that).

  • After vault, we go to floor and warm up JVB and JVA for 10 minutes. After warmups, we compete JVB first, then JVA.

  • After that we warmup Varsity for 10 minutes (on floor still). After warmups, Varsity competes.

  • After floor is done, we head to beam and warm up JVB and JVA for 10 minutes. After warmups, we compete JVB first, then JVA.

  • After that we warmup Varsity for 10 minutes (on beam still). After warmups, Varsity competes.

Every event has two judges on it. When judging is occurring for JVB and JVA, they only have one judge. When Varsity is competing, they have both judges judging them.

There is not usually an awards ceremony afterwards as kiddos are pretty tired so we usually get the results quickly, load up the cars, and try to get the kiddos home as soon as we can. We then review scores and celebrate the day after at practice.

For transportation, we will have two vans and some upperclassmen transporting kiddos to Middleton High School. Carpools will be decided at practice.

We will be wearing the light green leo that says Spartans on the front.

Line Ups:

Our lineups for duals are released at practice on Mondays. Now that we have scores coming in, we will start to determine lineups based on average scores. If kiddos are curious about their scores, they can always talk to me and I can show them our spreadsheet where everything is tracked. I know that line ups can cause stress and I'm always happy to talk to people about their placements. There are pros and cons to letting the numbers dictate the line up but as scores continue to come in, the only thing that could supersede the scores are start values (which is only used in certain situations such as ties in averages).

Jason's Deli Ordering:

We will have Jason's Deli as an option for this meet. If you would like a box for your athlete, please order. You have until Wednesday night to place the order. Remember that you can buy one at a time and don't have to buy them all at once.

1st Spaghetti Dinner:

Our first spaghetti dinner will be Monday after practice. Sierra's parents are hosting and their address is 2333 Talc Trail, Madison, WI.

Spaghetti Dinner Sign Up: FINAL CALL!

We have 2 spaghetti dinner spots still available to sign up for. If you are able to host or want to pair up with a parent to host, please sign up. If you want to reach out to other parents, I have attached the team contact list below. If we can't get these spots filled, we will go out for a team dinner instead.

A reminder that spaghetti dinners are dinners that are hosted by a family on the Monday of the week we have a dual meet. Dinner does not have to consist of just spaghetti. After practice ends on Monday, kiddos will head over for dinner, likely arriving around 7:20 PM. If you would like to host, the link is below:

Media Day #2 (Monday 12/9) IMPORTANT!

Our media day went AWESOME and the photos are already in! The link to the photos are below. The girls look OUTSTANDING!
