Hello everyone,
Welcome to Week 7 everyone!
Week 6 Recap:
Our sixth week of practice was spent preparing for our dual meet with Middleton. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we had a mock meet for any gymnast that had not yet competed and it went very well!
On Thursday, we had our dual meet against Middleton and scored a 118.05 while Middleton scored a 120.875. Our score was reflective of two varsity competitors not being able to compete due to injuries or sickness and is a great score to get, especially considering we pulled some first time competitors onto varsity. The meet was also a 3-judge dual meet (due to one of the judges getting COVID) and so it operated much slower than usual. Although we were there late, everyone stayed in good spirits right to the end. Because of the change in meet format and both teams having some players not able to compete, it was a good first dual meet for us as it was low pressure.
We did have some noteworthy accomplishments at the meet!
For the first time competitors: Mariah (first time competitor on beam) achieved her first No Fall star! First time competitors Natalie and Grace competed all around and both got an all around score of above 25.0! Mel got a sticky feet for a BEAUTIFUL back tuck dismount of beam and Amelia's bar routine debuted her first ever competed kip! Timmia also competed a new floor routine and successfully threw her roundoff-backhandspring-backtuck for the first time in competition! For the first time competitors, we are SO proud of you!
For the competitors who had competed before: Genevieve got sticky feet for an outstandingly stuck roundoff-backhandspring-backtuck on floor. Mia debuted her handstand pirouette and though unplanned, she competed a bars routine that impressed everyone. Kate competed her uprises for the first time this season AND achieved her first No Fall star on beam. Sierra had a gorgeous roundoff-backlayout1/2 on floor and Claire received another No Fall star for a solid beam routine AND got sticky feet for her stuck dismount!
We had also two inductees into our hall of fame. Please join me in congratulating Amelia and Natalie on their addition to the 2023 Hall of Fame! Amelia and Natalie were added for two reasons. The first was their accomplishment with a double goal knockout. Amelia got a long hang kip on the high bar and Natalie also got her long hang kip on the high bar with a castaway into a flyaway! Bars is one of the hardest events to practice, let alone compete. The ability to get a 10.0 start value on bars is also incredibly challenging. Their persistence in achieving those goals showed their commitment to one of the hardest events in the gym and helps to ensure that the Memorial lineup for bars is filled and full of potential. The second is the focus and tenacity they have both been showing at practice. Both Natalie and Amelia have been working all four events tirelessly. Working all four events can be challenging from a time management perspective and it can often feel like you don't have enough time to focus on everything. Both of them have been diligent in focusing on their goals and working each event as often as possible.
Week 7 Schedule:
Monday: Practice from 5 - 7 PM.
Tuesday: Practice from 4 - 6 PM, Kickball at 6 PM - 7 PM. (Or kickball at 4 PM and practice 5 - 7 PM - depending on wrestlers schedule). I will know more once I finish talking to the wrestling coach about this.
Wednesday: Day trip to the Kalahari.
Thursday: Practice from 4 - 6 PM.
Friday: Practice from 4 - 6 PM.
Winter Break Schedule:
We will have practices on the following days from 4 - 6 PM, with the caveat that if I can get us into a local gym for a practice, the time of practice may change. I am still working to see if I can find us gym space but tentatively, we will be at the school all of winter break.
December 21st (Thursday)
December 22nd (Friday)
December 26th (Tuesday)
December 27th (Wednesday)
December 28th (Thursday)
December 29th (Friday)
January 1st (Monday)
January 2nd (Tuesday)
A reminder that every athlete is required to go to at least 3 of the 8 practices, however, it is recommended they attend more if possible. I am understanding that family comes into town or that people travel for the holidays so if you are not able to make a practice due to that, please don't feel guilty for missing.
Week 7 Plans:
Monday: Beam lines to start with a two event rotation (vault is the required event and open gym for non-vaulters).
Tuesday: Routine day! We will be hitting as many routines as we can, with the start of practice focusing heavily on leaps and jumps.
Wednesday: No practice (We'll be chilling at the Kalahari!)
Thursday: Bars lines to start with a two event rotation (bars is the required event and open gym for non-bars).
Friday: Floor lines to start with a two event rotation (floor is the required event and open gym for non-floor).
Tuesday Report:
No Tuesday reports are needed this week.
Weight Room Practice:
We will be skipping the weight room practice to instead play kickball with the wrestlers.
Kalahari Day Trip:
Please refer to the other email for details about the Kalahari. Remember to send over $45 to cover the trip at your earliest convenience.
Planning Ahead:
Things to start preparing for that will get here before we know it:
January 4th: Memorial vs West Dual Meet & Teacher Night. Girls need to make sure their teacher is aware of teacher night this week to give them plenty of time to plan.
January 5th: The team sleepover is Friday night after practice. We will go out for dinner after practice and then head back to the gym for shenaningans.
January 5th: This is also our secret snowflake night! Have your girls start preparing their gifts now.
If anyone finds themselves with financial limitations regarding the gifts for their sister or secret snowflake, please reach out to me.
That's all I can think of for now. If anyone needs a ride during winter break to practice, myself or the upper classmen can assist. If anyone is also looking for extra gym time, let me know. I am happy to hang around after practice (and West doesn't practice until 6:30 PM).
Thanks everyone!
